In Ground Swimming Pools

In ground swimming pools are the most popular type of swimming pool but also the most expensive. If you have adequate space and a big enough budget then an in ground or below ground pool is right for you.

An in ground pool will also add value to your property and in today’s financial climate that can be a real boost to your property. Also the other major advantage of this type of pool is the fact you can choose the pool depth, width and length which you can’t do with an above ground swimming pool or a portable swimming pool.

What options are available to me?

There are 4 types of in ground swimming pool available on the market today, each one has  advantages and disadvantages:

  • Vinyl lined pools – Vinyl pools are the most common type of in ground pool, vinyl pools are installed by digging out the soil, constructing a frame around the pool and placing sand at the bottom. Lastly the vinyl liner is secured to the frame, the downside to this type of pool is that the vinyl lining will need replacing about every 10 years and also it should be drained during the winter months (as freezing weather could tear the vinyl)
  • Fiberglass pools – The body of the pool is constructed as one big piece of fiberglass, this fiberglass shell is then delivered to your home. The one benefit to this type of pool is lower maintenance compared to vinyl pools.
  • Concrete pools – One of the best in ground pool types available, although this type of pool is more time consuming and difficult to build it allows the customer to choose their exact layouts, also the concrete can be painted
  • Gunite pools -  Gunite swimming pools are similar to concrete pools except that the Gunite (a mixture of cement & sand mixed with water) is sprayed around the innards of the pool. The Gunite is then smoothed off using trowels and takes up to 1 week to set before its finished with tile, plaster, paint, fiberglass or aggregate
