Saltwater Generators For Swimming Pools
A saltwater pool generator is a device that recycles salt from your pool so that you no longer need to use chlorine tables, granules or chlorine liquid to maintain the chemical balance of your swimming pool. All you simply need to do is top the pool or generator with
salt on a regular basis.
Many people are confused by saltwater generators, so I will try and explain basically what they do. The salt you put in the pool is converted to a low dose sodium chloride, the sodium chloride then passes through the saltwater generator, as the chloride passes through the system an electrical charge is put through the chloride (known as electrolysis). The sodium is then removed as part of the electrolysis process and chloride is then produced (chloride is a natural form of chlorine)
There are a few reasons why people choose salt water generators over chlorine and bromine. Saltwater swimming pools do not make the skin itch or the eyes irritated and also the running costs will be cheaper in the long run (typically after the first 2-3 pool seasons).
Will the pool taste salty like seawater?
Simply put, no it will not taste salty. Seawater has 30,000 – 35,000 parts per million of salt (of course this varies from Ocean to Ocean). A saltwater swimming pool is around 2,500 to 5,000 parts per million, which makes it around 1/10 the level seawater.
Saltwater Swimming Pools Vs Chlorine Swimming Pools
There seems to be a big debate as to whether saltwater pools damage pool equipment such as swimming pool pumps and
other equipment. I believe that a saltwater pool that is not properly maintained could mean that other pool equipment could be affected by it. However I have seen many testimonials, videos and received emails from saltwater pool owners who have never had a problem and some of these people have had these systems for around 10 years. In fact most of the saltwater sceptics seem to be people working for companies who sell chlorine tablets, liquids etc, convenient if you ask me.
