Swimming Pool Covers

Traditionally Swimming Pool Covers are generally used for covering your in ground or above ground during the winter season. Secondly pool covers are used to stop dirt and debris from falling into your pool when not in use. Apart from the standard pool covers available there is a relatively new type of cover being sold across America & Canada, known as solar pool covers.

Solar pool covers use solar energy to trap heat inside the pool which can help raise the temperature by as much as 15% & help reduce water and chemical costs. So if you are planning to invest in a cover you may as well invest that little bit more and save in the long run.

Solar Pool Covers

Solar covers (sometimes referred to as solar blankets) are designed to keep heat inside your swimming pool. The solar cover sits on top of your pool, just like a regular cover but this solar cover does something amazing, as well as covering the pool it also raises the pool temperature by up to 15%. In fact there are several benefits of a solar pool covers:

  • Reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation - Because the cover helps keep evaporation contained inside the pool you can save up to 20 – 35% on water bills.
  • Reduce cleaning time - Because the cover helps keep dirt and debris out of your pool it will drastically reduce the time you spend maintaining it. Also you may find you use your pool pump less, this could mean the life of the pump is extended.
  • Reduces chemical use – Due to the fact water evaporates at a slower pace using the solar cover this also means you will not have to top up the swimming pool with chemicals. So if you make use of your solar cover on a regular basis you can save up to 25% on your pool chemical bills.
  • Keep the pool warm overnight – if you keep the solar cover on overnight then it will help keep the heat trapped from the daily sun inside the pool, so when you go to use your pool in the morning it will be a lot warmer compared to not using one.

What is a Micron

A micron is one millionth of a meter so basically the more microns the solar cover has the thicker the cover will be, also the better it will be at keeping heat in your pool. For example a 500 Micron pool cover will keep the water warmer then a 400 Micron cover but in some cases the cost difference can outweigh the benefits.
